Fuji has released a firmware update for the X-T2 (and other cameras) and with it has released it's RAW file editor, Fuji X RAW Studio. So, being the proud owner of a X-T2, I updated the firmware to Version 3.0, downloaded and installed the software and started it up.
Now, I made a mistake of not reading the manual in full (who does these days?) and when I first booted it up and connected it to my X-T2 I could not see my images. Now, first off, it's probably a good idea to point out that the software works differently from other RAW image editors. It actually uses the CPU in your camera to do the complicated stuff. That's why you need to connect your camera to your computer via USB (Mac only until Feb 2018 when the Windows version is released). You also need to change a setting in your camera.
Once you have set your connection mode to USB RAW Con./BACKUP RESTORE the camera will be able to communicate with the software.
The other key bit of information you need to follow is that you need to have your RAW images either in a folder on your computer or on the SD card but connected to your computer. If you leave them in the camera (like I did at first!) the software will not see them.
So, once you have your images on your computer, have put the camera into connection mode and connected it via USB (see below) then you can begin. Oh, remember also that your camera needs have a charged battery in it with enough charge to get you through your editing session.
If you have done everything correct you will see something like this:
On the right are various options for editing your image including the Film Simulation settings (Provia/Standard etc) and the same options you have on your camera such as SHARPNESS, COLOR, NOISE REDUCTION etc.
This brings me to what X RAW Studio brings to the table. The ability to use the same Film Simulation settings that you have in-camera, along with the various options to tweak noise reduction etc is a game-changer. Finally, we have probably the best RAW editor for Fuji RAW images, straight from the experts.
What's great about Fuji's approach is that as the images are processed using your camera's CPU means that you are using the same in-camera engine to process your files and this is advantageous too for anyone who has not got the latest pc workstation. As long as your Mac can run Mac OS X 10.10.5 then you are able to run the software. Windows have to wait until Feb 2018 and will need a pc with Windows 7.0 SP1 or above.
The software is not only easy to work with, it is also free. Thank you Fuji!
