Anna Atkins, the world’s first female photographer, was also the first person to print and publish a photographically illustrated book titled British Algae in 1843. Atkins was fascinated with Sir John Herschel's cyanotype process, which she took up as soon as it was invented in 1842. 

This cyanotype, created in Britain circa 1854, shows the outline of a dandelion flower and leaves, rendered in pale blue against a dark blue background. It is probably the first photographic portrait of a dandelion, and may even be considered a self-portrait, as the dandelion imprinted its own image on light-sensitive paper under the sun's rays, without the use of a camera. The photograph comes from Atkins’s finest album, which she presented to her friend and co-photographer Anne Dixon in 1854. 

Atkins produced this cyanotype by placing the dandelion on light-sensitive paper, an image-making technique she used for her three-volume British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. Although the cyanotype process was used to create impressionistic prints of plants, these prints were valued for their scientific detail and aesthetic appeal. Atkins' use of photography was both scientific and artistic, and she was already skilled in drawing shells and other natural specimens before taking up photography.

However, photography really has its roots in the camera obscura. Photography is literally defined as drawing with light, and the camera obscura was used by artists to easily draw or paint realistic landscapes and rendering of architecture. In its simplest form, a pinhole projects a scene in a dark room or box that the artist can basically trace over. It's thought the camera obscura dates back as far as 500 CE, as it's mentioned in Chinese literature from that period.

With the development of what we generally think of as photography back in the early 19th Century, photography became much more mobile. Of course, the earliest cameras were not as portable as today's smartphones or mirrorless cameras. It's amazing how far we have come in less than 200 years. The latest smartphones (think Apple iPhone 13 with its Pro 12MP camera system or the Galaxy S21 Ultra with it's 40 MP camera). Not only have cameras (whether smartphones or mirrorless cameras) become much more portable and affordable, but they have become so much more capable.


Well, one thing is certain, and that is that the future of photography includes even more AI (Artificial Intelligence). Current cameras and smartphones make use of AI in all sorts of ways. AI is sometimes referred to as machine learning, neural networks or computational photography, but it basically refers to software that adapts and learns.


AI will continue to become ever more advanced and capable, and it will be used to help us capture better images. One example of this is the use of deep learning, which is the technology behind Google's Pixel smartphone camera. This technology uses algorithms to learn what a great photo should look like, and it automatically adjusts the camera settings to help you capture that perfect image. We can also expect to see AI being used to improve the accuracy and speed of facial recognition, so that we can quickly identify people in our photos. AI will also be used to automatically identify objects or people in photos, and even to categorize and organize photos for us so that we can easily find them.
